The Cradle: A Pinehurst Collaboration

On September 30th, 2017, Pinehurst opened The Cradle, a 9-hole short course serving all players of all ages and abilities. Standing directly outside the famed clubhouse at Pinehurst, The Cradle was designed by golf architect, Gil Hanse, and features holes ranging from 56 yards to 127 yards.

A collaboration with Pinehurst, the Cradle Fescue Bag was designed for play on shorter courses where golfers are encouraged to carry fewer clubs for the 9-hole journey. The Cradle bag was inspired by the traditional ‘stovepipe’ golf bag design, and can be seen carried by “Putter Boy,” a significant icon to Pinehurst Resort.

The special edition Fescue Bag was built around Pinehurst’s Tartan, which is exclusively woven from Scottish wool that has been dyed by craftsmen and women and then loomed into the unique pattern. Highlighting the natural tones of the nautical-grade, cotton canvas, the center panel is accentuated with a distressed, brown leather scorecard slip pocket. The exterior also includes a magnetic-close, Pinehurst tartan pocket ideal for any combination of commonly accessed items. The strap is made from closely woven fabric and accented with the Pinehurst pattern, giving the bag an overall air of rich history juxtaposed with modern sensibility.

Dr. Leroy Culver carved the first nine holes out of the sand at Pinehurst in 1898, and nearly 120 years later The Cradle sits on the same historic area. “Pinehurst’s place in golf goes back almost as far as the time the game was first introduced in America,” says Pinehurst Owner and CEO Bob Dedman Jr. “As we embark on the latest era at Pinehurst, it’s symbolic that our newest course sits on the same ground as the original first holes of golf at Pinehurst. We look forward to watching players of all ages and all abilities enjoy golf at The Cradle.”

We are committed to designs that embrace the heritage of our game, in which having a good time plays an integral part. Fescue Bags are thoughtfully designed and crafted in the USA specifically for partial sets that cater to the shorter course experience, like that at The Cradle and Bandon Preserve, while maintaining relevance for the traditional full length course. These artisan handcrafted Cradle bags were made specially for this landmark opening and are available exclusively at the Pinehurst Resort.
