Honored in this design, Chief Joseph led the Nez Perce tribe, native to northeastern Oregon in the late 1800's. The Nez Perces’ traditional territory centered on the lower Snake River and tributaries of the Salmon and Clearwater rivers in what is now northeastern Oregon, southeastern Washington, and central Idaho.
